Angry resident of a community in Ikorodu have lynched a man accused of being a member of Badoo, a cult group that has been unleashing terror in the area recently.
The lynching happened four days after suspected Badoo cultists killed a couple and two of their three children in the area, the Punch reports.
According to an eyewitness, the suspect was caught at Igbo Oluwo area of the town, and was subsequently beaten to a pulp and set ablaze.
According to the eyewitness, the last killing angered residents and many of them decided to lynch the suspect despite appeals by security operatives and traditional leaders in the area for them not to take laws into their hands.
“The suspect was caught with another at Igbo-Oluwo. The second suspect ran away. The residents noticed that the two suspects rubbed their bodies with oil, a known method used by members of the dreaded Badoo cult, the eyewitness said.
“At around 6.45am, after beating the suspect brutally, they marched him to Jumofak Junction and set him ablaze.”
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Olarinde Famous-Cole, said the police was investigating the circumstances leading to the lynching.
“Despite our appeals, residents still took the laws into their hands today at Ikorodu. Unfortunately, the more such things happen, the more we would not be able to get to the root of the matter. If they handed him over to the police, we would have been able to question him. In any case, we are still investigating the incident,” Famous-Cole told the Punch.
The latest killing of five members of one family on Tuesday puts the number of suspected victims of the cult to about 26 in Ikorodu.
Following the failure of the police to apprehend those responsible for the killings, members of the community have deployed traditionalists who have performed rituals with the aim of bringing down the cult.
